At Scallywags we champion wellbeing for all, below we outline the key pointers and dedicated steps we take to ensure this is met.

CHILDREN’S WELL-BEING

​

1. Safe, Nurturing Environment

  • Ensure the nursery is warm, welcoming, and child-friendly.

  • Promote a culture of kindness, empathy, and respect.

2. Emotional Support

  • Key Person Approach: Assign a consistent adult to form a strong attachment.

  • Encourage children to express feelings through play, art, and storytelling.

  • Teach emotional literacy using age-appropriate language (e.g. naming feelings).

3. Healthy Lifestyle

  • Provide nutritious meals and snacks.

  • Encourage physical activity indoors and outdoors.

  • Build restful, calm periods into the day (e.g. naps, quiet time, story sessions).

4. Inclusive Practice

  • Celebrate diversity, respect individual needs and family backgrounds.

  • Adapt activities for children with SEND or cultural differences.

5. Consistent Routines

  • Predictable routines help children feel safe and secure.

  • Use visual schedules to help them understand what to expect.

 

STAFF WELL-BEING

  • Regular one-to-ones and supervision to reflect on practice and well-being.

  • Provide training on mental health, safeguarding, child development, and stress management.

  • Encourage career progression and recognition.

  • Mental health first aiders in the team.

  • Access to employee support programs or counselling services.

  • Promote peer support and team bonding.

4. Involvement and Recognition

  • Include staff in decision-making.

  • Celebrate achievements and milestones.

 

PARENTS’ WELL-BEING

1. Strong Relationships

  • Daily handovers with key workers.

  • Open-door policy for questions and concerns.

2. Communication

  • Share updates message books and daily chats 

  • Provide tips for supporting children at home (sleep, routines, behaviour).

3. Parental Involvement

  • Invite parents to stay-and-play sessions, workshops or celebrations.

  • Support transitions with pre-visits and gradual settling-in periods.

4. Emotional Support

  • Be available to listen—sometimes just being heard helps.

  • Signpost parents to local support services (mental health, financial, housing).
